Sleep Physician - Sleep Medicine
The Sleep Medicine Centre at the National University Hospital of Iceland (Landspitali) is looking for a specialist sleep physician to join the team.
Landspítali is the sole clinical provider of polysomnography (both in-lab and home PSG) and PAP therapy in Iceland and manages the full range of sleep related disorders including sleep related breathing disorders, circadian disorders, hypersomnias, parasomnias, insomnia, sleep related movement disorders and more. The service maintains close working and educational links with other health centers across the country involved in the diagnosis of sleep disorders. Iceland has a strong tradition in sleep research, including collaborations on both sides of the Atlantic.
The medical team includes full and part time specialists in sleep medicine, pulmonology, otorhinolaryngology and paediatrics trained in Australia, the United States, Sweden and Norway. Work is done in a combination of English and Icelandic, with Icelandic lessons provided through the hospital within work hours, and the full-time workload is 36 hours per week.

The position is available from December 1st, 2025, or by agreement.
The position is full-time; however, it may be possible to negotiate for a lower percentage position. Tax incentives are available for up to 3 years for foreign experts recruited to Iceland.
MAIN PROJECTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Interpretation and reporting of sleep investigations, including polysomnography, respiratory polygraphy, actigraphy, and vigilance studies
- Diagnosis and medical management of a full range of sleep disorders in both inpatient and outpatient settings
- Prescription, initiation, and ongoing management of PAP therapies (both non-invasive, and invasive via tracheostomy)
- Assisting the medical director of the sleep service and other colleagues in the development and clinical oversight of sleep services throughout Iceland
- Participation in education and training for specialists preparing for the ESRS Somnologist examination, junior doctors, nurses, and sleep scientists
- Participation in research work
- Participation in general medical or specialty specific after-hours on call is available
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current specialist medical registration in a relevant specialty and a formal credential in sleep medicine (e.g. FRACP Specialist Physician in Sleep Medicine, ABMS certification in Sleep Medicine, ESRS Somnologist ¿ Expert in Sleep Medicine), or anticipated achievement of this no later than 30. June 2026.
- Eligibility to obtain Icelandic specialist medical registration
- Experience in the diagnosis and management of both respiratory and non-respiratory sleep disorders, including the interpretation of PSG, actigraphy, and vigilance testing, management of PAP therapy, and medical management of central hypersomnias, parasomnias, and sleep related movement disorders.
- Good communication skills
- Ability to work in English and/or Icelandic in a professional healthcare environment
- Willingness to learn Icelandic

Salary according to the current collective agreement concluded by the Minister of Finance and the Economy and the Medical Association of Iceland.
